Combined Modality Therapy: New Insights, Old Roadblocks (Medscape)
Summary, by Corey Langer, MD, of findings presented at the 9th World Conference on Lung Cancer (September 2000). Discusses the implications of several studies that address the use of combined modality therapy in patients with locally advanced NSCLC. Notes that combined modality therapy, particularly concurrent chemoradiation, has become the standard of practice in fit patients with unresectable NSCLC. Aimed at physicians. Registration required for free access to Medscape. [9/00]

Innovative Treatment Strategies in Locally Advanced and/or Unresectable NSCLC (Moffitt Cancer Center)
by Benjamin Movsas, MD
7, no.1 Cancer Control (January/February 2000): 25-34
Reviews trials investigating innovative treatment strategies for patients with locally advanced and/or unresectable NSCLC, including altered radiation fractionation schema, conformal 3-dimensional radiotherapy, and combined chemoradiotherapy regimens.

Preoperative Chemotherapy for Lung Cancer Does Not Increase Surgical Morbidity (Annals of Thoracic Surgery)
Abstract of a study reported in the April 2001 issue of the Annals of Thoracic Surgery that found preoperative chemotherapy for NSCLC did not significantly affect overall morbidity or mortality. Concludes that the potential for enhanced survival in resectable NSCLC justifies continued study of preoperative chemotherapy. [4/01]

Post-Surgery Chemotherapy Improves Survival in Early Lung Cancer (National Cancer Institute)
Discusses the results of two large randomized studies that demonstrated in early-stage NSCLC, treatment after surgery with chemotherapy improves overall survival compared to surgery alone. The findings help resolve a controversy over the value of post-surgical chemotherapy for early lung cancer and are likely to change the standard of care. [5/04]

Adding Chemotherapy to Radiation After Surgery Adds No Benefit in Lung Cancer (NCI's cancer.gov)
Reports on a study published in the 10/26/00 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine that found adding chemotherapy to radiation therapy does not prolong survival in operable NSCLC. The large, randomized study compared the chemotherapy (cisplatin and etoposide) and radiation combination to radiation alone. Patients receiving the combined treatment had a median survival of 38 months compared to 39 months among those receiving radiation alone. Overall survival and recurrence rates were also similar in the two groups. [10/00]

Three-Pronged Approach an Added Treatment Option for NSCLC Spread to Surrounding Lymph Nodes (National Cancer Institute)
Reports on a study presented at the 2003 ASCO annual meeting that found patients with NSCLC that has spread to surrounding lymph nodes who were treated with a three-pronged approach using chemotherapy, radiation and surgery lived longer than patients treated with just chemotherapy and radiation. Notes that it remains unclear whether three-pronged treatment extends patients' overall survival compared to the two-pronged approach. [6/03]
